February 26, 2012

Trim's Neil Heffernan
Trim 2-10
Kilmainham 0-8
Trim Intermediate footballers entertained Kilmainham on Sunday afternoon in Trim in the second round of the Meath All County A League. After loosing their first round game one week earlier the home team were determined not to have a repeat result. They played with greater fluidity and intensity from the get-go and eventually came away with an eight point win. The main feature of the game was the dominance of their midfielders Shane Kennedy and Frankie Murphy who contributed 1 - 3 of the score between them. Centre forward Michael Lowther was also 'on fire'. His workrate throughout was exemplary. He was a constant thorn to the Kilmainham side and ended with a score tally of five points from play.
For the first twenty minutes of the first half the game see-sawed with neither team getting full dominance. Trim started off the brighter and had two points on the board within seven minutes. The first was the end result of a length of the pitch move starting with goalkeeper Brendan Murphy and after a lot of movement in front of the opposition goal Michael Lowther nailed the point. The second point was a well taken point by the in-running mid fielder Frankie Murphy who took the ball a speed and fired over the point from thirty five meters. Kilmainham got on top and clocked up three un-answered points to take the lead at the half way stage of the half. The Trim riposte was immediate and sharp. They fired over three points between the sixteenth and nineteenth minute. The first came from a Brendan Murphy kickout that was fielded by Shane Kennedy at midfield. He flicked on the Alan Douglas who was steaming up the wing. After a 40 meter run, scything through the opposition defence, Douglas hit a fine point. The other two points were from the boot of the ever accurate Michael Lowther. Both sides then traded a point apiece but the score of the game came with one minute left in the half. Full forward Damien McGee gained possession from a long pass down field. He passed to Michael Lowther on the left wing. Lowther switched the play to the right wing where he found the in-running Shane Kennedy. Without changing pace or direction Kennedy hit the net with a rocket of a shot to leave Trim entering the break five points in front.
Trim faced into the teeth of the strong breeze in the second half and came under severe pressure for the first fifteen minutes but their defence was staunch with the central players of Robert Brennan and Stephen Farrell handling any crises with aplomb. They were ably assisted by corner backs Maurice Power and Colm Flaterty who marked tight. These back four soaked up the pressure ensuring no leakage giving Brendan Murphy a trouble free day in goal. During this period Trim managed two points, one from Frankie Murphy and a pointed free from James Toher to go seven points up. Kilmainham had a scoring spurt in the sixteenth minute with two quick fire points but Lowther halted their charge with a point one minute later. On twenty minutes the home side put the game out of reach of the visitors. From an Alan Douglas free from the middle of the field, corner forward Neil Heffernan gained possession in the right corner. He turned his marker and after a piercing run towards goal he found the back of the net for one of his many fine goals for Trim. Trim went eleven points up with a Frankie Murphy two minutes from the end. The game petered out with two Kilmainham points to leave the score difference at ten points.
The Trim team was:
Brendan Murphy, Colm Flaherty, Robert Brennan, Maurice Power, Alan Douglas, Stephen Farrell, Daryl Phelan, Francis Murphy, Shane Kennedy, Mark Gilsenan, Michael Lowther, James Toher, Eoin McGrath, Damien McGee, Keith Hamilton.
