AFL4: Meath Hill grab vital two points

February 20, 2012

Meath Hill's Michael Byrne
Meath Hill 0-08
Longwood 0-07

Longwood suffered their first defeat of the season after a tough contest on Sunday morning.

Meath Hill opened the scoring with a brace of frees before Martin Birmingham got Longwood of the mark with a close range pointed free. Longwood were dominating but couldn't show it on the scoreboard and further points from Meath Hill left Longwood trailing after 20 minutes. Darragh Maguire kept Longwood in the game with two fantastic point blank saves to prevent certain goals. Michael Burke and Karl Ennis reduced the deficit at half time to 0-8 points to 0-4. Meath Hill were buoyed by the scoring of Mark Tully and Tommy Rooney.

Longwood started brightly in the second half but again failed to register on the scoreboard until Michael Burke split the post after 40 minutes. Anthony Healy spurred two great goal chance for the south Meath men in quick succession but Longwood stayed battling and were nearly rewarded at the end when Rory Maguire fisted a ball from close range just over the bar. Longwood's defence was strong throughout the second half and Meath Hill failed to register a single score. Longwood had a few opportunities to win it but in the end Meath Hill held out to win by one point.

In what was a committed overall Meath Hill team performance, Michael Byrne and Barry Kieran were to the fore along with Tully and Rooney.
