AFL3: Clann open with Ballivor victory

February 20, 2012

Clann Na nGael's Caoimhin Griffin
Clann na nGael 0-11
Ballivor 0-07

This match had been fixed for Ballivor but because the pitch was unplayable the game was played in Athboy.

Last year's Junior champions Ballivor started the better team and took an early 2 point lead with both scores coming from Killian Canavan. Clann opened their scoring through county minor Caoimhin Griffin and then had 3 unanswered points to lead 4 points to 2 after 20 minutes. Damien Tuite had a goal chance but his punch from a crossed ball just went over the cross bar. Half time saw the Athboy parish side leading by 2 points.

After the break Clann Na nGael had two good goal chances but managed points from both. Aaron Ennis converted 3 frees, all of which were quite difficult to leave 6 points between the sides with 10 minutes left. Ballivor were thrown a life line by referee Martin Ennis who awarded a penalty after a Ballivor forward was fouled in the act of shooting. However, luck was with the Clanns as Clayton Keegans well struck penalty struck the cross bar and the defence managed to scramble the ball clear. Ballivor tried to get back into the game with goal chances but the home side stood firm to gain their first points of the new season.
