ACFL 4: Drumconrath oust St. Brigids
February 19, 2012

Drumconrath's John McDermott
Drumconrath 1-8
St Brigids 0-6
Drumconrath have enjoyed their best start to a season since 2006 as they managed a 5 point win over a decent St Brigids side in the early throw in at Drumconrath. A mistake riddled 1st half which suprisingly lacked little fire ended Drumconrath 0-4 to St Brigids 0-2. The Visitors Killian Kiernan pointing the only score from play which incidently was the very 1st score of the game. Both sides managed four wides each as Leighton Irwin hit all Drumconrath scores (4 frees).
St Brigids lost a player to a straight red just on half time as the Referee had little choice as the incident happened directly in front of him.
While Fergal Hennessy pointed his 2nd free early in the second half Drumconrath with Peter McEvoy and Stephan Crosby in control around mid field and Irwin hit two points from play. The same player made no mistake when he found the net on 45 minutes after a good run by Brendan Lyons. Irwin still had work to do but a trade mark side step made space and there was only one result and the ball nestled in the net.
A nasty injury to Peter McEvoy held the game up for 7 minutes and when things got moving again St Brigids benefited most and from Hennessy (2 frees) and Centre back Peter Moore narrowed the gap to a goal. Drums kicked on with Christy Tighe working hard along with Oran Finnegan and John McDermott prominent in defence. This led to Irwin pointing two frees following fouls on the lively Brendan Lyons and Derek Duff but the fact that only Iwin scored and Drums kicked 12 wides shows there is a lot of work ahead of them.
Stephen Browne, AJ Gilsenan and Killian Kiernan impressed for St Brigids.
