AFL4: St. Brigids overcome struggling Slane

February 13, 2012

St Brigid's Oisin Kiernan
Slane 1-4
St Brigids 1-12

St Brigid's GFC secured their first 2 points of their 2012 league campaign with a convincing home win against Slane.

This was a poor display from a Slane team that never got into the game. Slane were hit with a quickfire goal from St Brigids and this was to set the tone for the game.

Slane struggled throughout and were already 1-2 down before Stephen Goodwin registered their first point. A brace of frees from Oisin Kiernan and Fergal Hennessy and a fantastic save from goalkeeper Ciaran Plunkett ensured that Brigids's went in at half time with a 7-point lead, with Slane only managing one point to leave the sides 1-5 to 0-2 at the break.

Slane would have looked for a better showing in the second half but this didn't materialise and St Brigids continued to dominate throughout. St Brigids pulled further away, however, Slane were given a slight glimmer of hope as St Brigids had a man sent off. Slane rallied slightly and were rewarded with a penalty which Alan Harding slotted away. St Brigids still managed to keep Slane at a distance with some excellent free taking from Oisin Kiernan. The introduction of John Clarke helped Slane and he registered a well taken free before Johnny Gibney got Slane's final score of the match.

In a disappointing day for Slane it finished 1-4 to 1-12

Best for Slane on a poor day were; G Carolan and S Gough, while Ciaran Plunkett, Rory Geraghty and Oisin Kiernan impressed for St Brigid's.
