IFC: Moynalvey scrape past Castletown

May 02, 2011

A delighted Ray Ryan after scoring Moynalvey's late late goal to seal the win against Castletown in the Meath IFC at Athboy.
Moynalvey made it two wins from as many outings in Group A of the 2011 Meade Potato Intermediate Football Championship when defeating Castletown by the minimum margin at Athboy on Sunday afternoon May 1st.

Moynalvey 2-7
Castletown 1-9

Moynalvey condemned Castletown to their second one point defeat of the campaign with a late injury time goal. Very little separated the sides at any point during the game with the sides leaving the field tied at 1-4 apiece at half time. Moynalvey's first half tally came from John Donoghue (0-1), Ken Hyland (0-1) and Mark O'Sullivan (0-1), with Ray Ryan converting two frees and a penalty.
Despite Moynalvey playing with the breeze behind their backs after the interval, it was Castletown in a change of jersey who hit the ground running hitting the first two points of the second period. By the three quarter mark Ryan had Moynalvey level again converting two frees. In the 47th minute Moynalvey were reduced to 14 men when James Weldon was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Ryan hit his fourth point of the afternoon to push Moynalvey a point ahead with 8 minutes remaining, but in the final minutes of normal time Castletown's extra man advantage looked to have took it's toil on Moynalvey and they seemed to be heading for their first two points of the campaign when scoring a further two points to lead 1-9 to 1-7 at the end of normal time.
But with alot of injury time to be added on Moynalvey's heads never dropped, and when a John Donoghue free was launched high into the goal mouth area it was top scorer Ryan who rose highest to get Moynalvey out of jail and finish the ball to the net with the last piece of play of the game.

Despite a somewhat lacklustre display, Moynalvey remain only one of two teams on full points after round 2 of the intermediate football championship as they top Group A on 4 points heading into the 3rd round where they have a bye.
