IFC: Rothwell's late strike sinks Castletown

Ballinlough 2-8 Castletown 0-13 A point from Ken Rothwell deep into injury time secured Ballinlough's second win in the group and guarantee's the North Meath men a play-off spot at worse. That strike from Rothwell took his haul for the evening to an impressive 1-6. Playing with the aid of a strong wind in the first half Castletown raced into a commanding 5 point lead, with James Finnerty and Darren Clarke leading the way for Colm Ratty's charges. A pointed free from Ken Rothwell seemed to settle Ballinlough, however Castletown responded well and added two more points. With the clock ticking towards half-time and down by 6, Ballinlough stepped up their game and Rothwell landed the last two points of the half. That left Ballinlough down by 4 at half time but having the advantage of the wind in the second half. Castletown started the second half brightly and registered the first point of the second half from the brilliant James Finnerty. The turning point in the game came when a 45' from Kevin Devine dropped short and after a mix up in the Castletown defence the ball ended up in the back of the net. After good work from the Red's Cian Mallon pointed to put the minimum between the two teams. The teams then traded points to leave the game on a knife edge heading into the last quarter. The Ballinlough defense remained solid and the team's hard work was rewarded by a goal from Rothwell. Castletown were not going to lie down and responded well to level the match. With the game seemingly heading for a draw, up stepped Rothwell to land the winning point with the last kick of the ball and break Castletown hearts.
