SFC: Trim too good for Rathkenny

April 20, 2009

Trim's Frankie Murphy breaks from the pack versus Rathkenny during the Meath SFC at Simonstown.
Trim 0-16 Rathkenny 0-5 Trim senior footballers opened their Senior Championship campaign on Saturday evening in Simonstown with this comprehensive win over a disappointing Rathkenny side. Trim opened the scoring with a Mark McCormack point which was followed by two quick points from Rathkenny which put them in front for the only time in the game. Trim then replied with two points from Paul Gilsenan from midfield and also from the hard working Michael Lowther. The first half was hard fought and close but Rathkenny were guilty of poor shooting which allowed Trim to keep their noses in front. A well taken Neil Heffernan point finished the half leaving the town side ahead by 5 points to 3 at the break. The second half started as one way traffic and Trim registered the first six scores. This included two long range efforts by Ronan Fitsimons and this was followed by an end to end move which started with a Darren Fay clearance that was well worked up the field and resulted in an Eoin McGrath score. Points from McGrath and Gilsenan completed the scoring. Overall, while Trim will be happy to get the opening win, plenty of improvement is needed as Rathkenny were afforded plenty of scoring opportunities especially in the first half. Trim - B. Murphy, P.
