Staunton rescues Mitchel's
July 22, 2008
Tooreen 1-10
Castlebar Mitchel's 1-10
With a goal and a point in injury time in this U21A hurling county final, Castlebar Mitchel's came from behind at the death for a share of the spoils against a hotly fancied Tooreen side. Keith Staunton was Castlebar's hero in the dying minutes of the game as his speculative shot found the back of the Tooreen net, while his teammate Micheal Clune converted a free with the final puck of the game to tie up the scores.
A Ciaran Charlton Tooreen goal in the opening half put his side ahead at the break by 1-5 to 0-4, in what was a free ridden opening half. Joey Ganley - who fininshed with five points for Tooreen - extended his sides lead even more before Castlebar began their comeback.
Stauntons late goal came in the 60th minute before Micheal Clune - who was also in fine freetaking form - dragged his Castlebar side back level, recording his sixth pointed free of the game in the process. The sides will meet again next week to decide the outcome of the U21A Championship for 2008.
