Hurlers advance
July 21, 2008
Mayo 3-18
Wicklow 1-22 AET
in Aughrim.
The Mayo hurlers underlined their renaissance under Martin Brennan and Pete Finnerty by overcoming Wicklow in Aughrim to book a place in the semi-finals of the Christy Ring Cup.
After leading for much of the game, Wicklow found that they had to depend on two injury time points from Ronan Keddy and corner-back Geoffrey Bermingham to level the match at full-time 1-16 to 2-13 and put the game to extra-time. Mayo's two goals, both coming in the second half were courtesy of Adrian Freeman and Stephen Broderick.
Another goal for Mayo in the first period of extra-time, scored by Derek McConn put the westerners into a one-point lead going into the last 10 minutes.
Keith Higgins stretched that lead to two points at the start of the second period of extra time and Wicklow were just not able to bridge the gap.
