Brennan relishing Garden clash

July 17, 2008
Mayo hurling manager Martin Brennan has admitted that he is pleased with the draw his side received for the quarter-finals of the Christy Ring Cup away to Wicklow. Kerry's six-point win last weekend meant that Brennan's side advanced to the last eight on score difference where they were drawn for a meeting with the Garden County at Aughrim. "It's great for the lads, it's no less than they deserve," said Brennan. "We've put in an awful lot of work, and I'd have to say, I'm quite confident - we got the best draw possible. It was either that or go off to Newbridge to play Kildare or go up the north to Down. So we don't mind going down to Wicklow. It's not going to be easy, but we're looking forward to it.it's great to be there." The last time the two sides met Wicklow came away with a two-point win in the first round of the league earlier this year, but the Mayo boss will be hoping that his side's improvement in recent months can help them dig out a result their visit. "We played them this year below in Arklow in the first round of the league," recalled Brennan. "They beat us by two points, but I would seriously hope that we've improved a lot from that day. Now, (they'll also) have improved, and they beat Westmeath in the last game. But I've a fair idea of them. We'll give it a shot." Mayo take on Wicklow in the quarter-finals of the Christy Ring Cup this Saturday at Aughrim with a throw-in time scheduled for 5.00pm.
