Hurlers back on track

Mayo    0-18 Kerry   0-15 Mayo got their Christy Ring Hurling campaign back on track with this spirited win over Kerry in McHale Park on Saturday. Mayo were dealt a blow half-way through the opening half when centre-back Seamie Barrett was dismissed for a second yellow. However, with a man down and playing into a strengthening breeze, Mayo clawed themselves back from a six point deficit to go in at the break just three down on 0-12 to 0-9. The switching of Keith Higgins from attack to defence solidified the Mayo rearguard for the second half, and Higgins (3f) along with his brother Pearse (0-2) and Adrian Freeman (3 frees) were all to the fore for Mayo. Kerry's leading marksman Michael Conway - who finished with 0-9 in total - also received his marching orders with ten minutes remaining before Freeman capped off a fine Mayo performance by scoring Mayo's final free from out near the touchline. Mayo now wait for the outcome of the Kerry-Meath tie on Saturday in Kerry, to see if they have done enough to qualify for the quarter finals of the Ring Cup. A three, four or five point win for the Kingdom would see Mayo's exit, while any other result would see Mayo advance.
