Davitts GAA Club notes
July 07, 2008
The u-21 team were defeated, 2-10 to 1-12, by Kiltane in Dohooma on Wednesday evening, in the first round of the B championship. This was a real thriller and a classic game of two halves.
Kiltane played with the advantage of the wind in the first half and led by 2-6 to 0-4 at the break. This advantage could have been greater but for some excellent defending by Tommy Nolan, Johnno Clarke and Michael Ronayne, and the tremendous workrate of centre forward Keith Glynn. If the first half was dominated by Kiltane, the second half belonged to Davitts, with the introduction of Tommy Mitchell to midfield helping secure a lot of possession in this sector, and forwards Fergal McGrath, Keith Prendergast and Liam Kearns in top form. Points by McGrath (2), Mitchell, Glynn, Pendergast (4) and a cracking goal by Kearns left just a point in it, but Kiltane held on to gain two precious points. Davitts team: Paddy Kirrane, Tommy Nolan, Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke (0-1), Michael Ronayne, Laurence Daly, Shane Mitchell, David Heneghan, Keith Prendergast (0-6), Keith Glynn (0-2), Kevin Connolly, Fergal McGrath (0-2), Liam Kearns (1-0). Subs used: Tommy Mitchell (0-1) and Fergal Rattigan.
The junior team locked horns with neighbours Garrymore on Saturday evening in Ballindine. Davitts won on a final scoreline of 2-13 to 3-7. Davitts were in control from the start, but Garrymore scored 3-2 in the final ten minutes and nearly snatched the game. Davitts had star players in Kevin Gallagher, Johnno Clarke, Michael Ronayne, Tommy Mitchell, Mark Diskin (using his experience to good effect), and team captain Fionan Moran who scored 1-4, and led by example. Best for Garrymore were the elegant Mark Hyland, Brian Walsh, Martin Lynskey ( has lost 10 or 20 yards in pace but still knows where the posts are) and impressive sub Frostie Cunningham, a central figure in Garrymore's late revival.
On Sunday Davitts hosted Claremorris in the O Mara Cup, and were defeated 1-11 to 0-9 in a keenly contested match. Claremorris played with the stiff breeze in the first half and led by 0-7 to 0-3 at the break. The crucial score came midway through the second half, when Claremorris midfielder Gary Mullins goaled after a good run. Best for Davitts were Tommy Nolan, Derek Mooney, Colm Roche, Declan Healy, and second half substitute Michael Conroy, who scored 4 good points.
