James Horan believes that the vacant Roscommon senior football managerial post would be an "enticing job" for any manager.

John Evans stepped down from the role on Wednesday after two years in charge with the Rossies and former Mayo boss Horan thinks there will be plenty of interest in the position, considering the Connacht side's potential.

"It certainly would be a good challenge," Horan told Newstalk's Off The Ball radio show. "I think the framework there is pretty strong from the underage structures so I'm sure there will be plenty of people lining up to have a crack at that one.

"If you look at the form guide and the underage structures - the four U21s in a row and we know they have some very good players like the Murtaghs and Smiths - so from that point of view it should be an enticing job.

"John Evans has brought them from Division 3 to Division 1 back-to-back, won a Connacht FBD League and has done very well, so you'd think the direction is the right way.

"But it's a really tricky one because you go into Roscommon now, they're in Division 1, it's probable or likely that they could be relegated from that because Division 1 is dog territory, it really is. They haven't been there, so they might find that tough.

"That can bring stresses and strains to a young team that are trying to make it - that straight away they go down and confidence goes with that.

"And then you have Mayo coming back strong again, so there's that element of it."
