Mayo U21 boss steps down

June 15, 2015

Niall Heffernan has announced that he won't be seeking a third year as Mayo U21 football manager.

Heffernan endured a frustrating two seasons at the helm, winning just one championship game in that time. That came against Leitrim this year. Mayo were knocked out of the Connacht U21FC by Roscommon and Galway in 2014 and '15 respectively.

He said in a statement to the Mayo county board: "I was immensely proud and humbled to be appointed to this post in 2013 and I deeply regret that we were not in a position to bring success to our great county.

"I wish to thank my fantastic backroom teams for their great work, skill, passion and knowledge, and I know they left no stone unturned in their efforts to succeed.

"It was a privilege to work with great players who gave their all to the cause - they were a credit to their families and clubs, but mostly to themselves."
