Holmes puzzled by collapse

Joint-manager Pat Holmes was at a loss to explain Mayo's dismal performance against Dublin.

"When you concede 2-18, that is something we have to look at," he said.

"It's difficult to analyse it in full and know exactly what went wrong. We came here with the intention of competing hard for two National League points and we failed to do that.

"We need to go back and look at what exactly went wrong and try and correct it. You don't become bad footballers overnight, so we have to look at it."

Unsurprisingly, Dublin manager Jim Gavin cut a contented figure after his side pulled clear of the relegation zone and put themselves in contention for a semi-final spot.

"The performance was up there with what we're looking for," he noted.

"There's moments in a game when you see things coming from the training field and that's the pleasing thing. From the players' perspective, they've got great faith in what's going on, they've got great belief in the path that we want to take this year.

"I'm just delighted for them, with all the hard work they put in. It's a small, small step."
