Higgins: it's been some week

Mayo's Keith Higgins.

Keith Higgins has described Ballyhaunis' feat in winning both the Mayo SHC and IFC titles as "special".

The All Star footballer and dual star scored two points as Ballyhaunis claimed the local bragging rights by edging out Tooreen in yesterday's Mayo SHC final. He was joined on the team by his older brother and 10-time Mayo SHC medallist Pierce, while their father Peter was manager.

The success came just seven days after Ballyhaunis beat Hollymount/Carramore to land the IFC title, and Higgins enthused in the Western People: "Winning with the club is very special and when there's family involved it's even better, but these are the lads I'd have played with since I was eight or nine years of age, and it's just a very proud moment now.

"I don't know what to say about Pierce - we'll eventually have to drag him off the pitch one of these years. He keeps doing it year on year and in fairness we can't ask much more from him.

"It has been some week in the club and this rounds it off nicely. To win the hurling and the football in the one year is very special and we always knew how hard it was going to be today.

"It was always going to be a battle. We moved ahead midway through the second half, but didn't peg on enough scores and they came back at us again, but thankfully we held out."
