From Dubai to Ballyhaunis

October 08, 2014

Emigration is a major problem particularly in counties like Galway and Mayo.

Ballyhaunis captain Liam Lyons could well put in a claim of being one of the most dedicated GAA players in the country.

Lyons helped guide his native club to the Mayo intermediate football championship title following a one point win over Hollymount/Carramore last weekend.

It has been a long journey for Lyons who amazingly is based in Dubai with his work and has been travelling back and forth to Mayo at the weekends.

"I come home on a Thursday, usually fly home on Sunday, but I won't be flying back today," Lyons told the Western People in the aftermath of the final.

We've heard of players travelling home from England for matches, but surely none have flown so frequently and from so far as the Ballyhaunis captain.
