Mayo manager saga leaves sour taste in McHale's mouth

Liam McHale has declared he will never be involved with a Mayo team again as as result of the mis-handling of the appointment of Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes as a joint senior football management team by the County Board.

Chairman Paddy McNicholas, in particular, has come under fire with cultural officer Gerry Bourke, who labelled the appointment process "a sham", tendering his resignation in protest.

Former star McHale, who would have been part of Kevin McStay's backroom team, told Newstalk's Off the Ball show: "We were told their (Connelly and Holmes) presentations were better. Ours was too radical and had too much change for the county board.

"Mayo has lost two All-Ireland finals and that is what we have been doing for 25 years.

"We felt there were lots of changes needed in the style of football, but the county board, and Paddy in particular, felt continuity is required."

Club delegates will get their chance to have their say on the matter at a meeting tomorrow night (Thursday).
