HS football team of the week

September 01, 2014

The hoganstand.com football team of the week.

There was plenty of heated debate in the office this morning over our football team of the week selection and the omission of Donegal captain Michael Murphy was one of many talking points.

1. Paul Durcan (Donegal)

The Donegal shot-stopper's kick-outs were top class and he got down low to deny Diarmuid Connolly with a game-changing save.

2. Neil McGee (Donegal)

Tasked with the job of policing Bernard Brogan, the tenacious McGee limited the former Footballer of the Year to two points from play before his black card.

3. Eamon McGee Donegal)

The McGee brothers are made of stern stuff and Eamon won his personal duel with Eoghan O'Gara hands down.

4. Keith Higgins (Mayo)

It was difficult not to feel some sympathy for the Mayo defender who battled valiantly trying to keeep tabs on James O'Donoghue.

5. Aidan O'Mahony (Kerry)

The Kerry veteran's vast experience was a key ingredient in their extra-time victory over Mayo.

6. Peter Crowley (Kerry)

The all-action Crowley produced a performance brimming with determination and refused to give an inch to the Mayo attack.

7. Paddy McGrath (Donegal)

Dealt comfortably with the threat posed by emerging Dublin star Cormac Costello and his replacement Kevin McManamon.

8. Neil Gallagher (Donegal)

He lined up in the forwards but did all his best work in the familiar surroundings of the middle third and played a key role in Colm McFadden's goal.

9. David Moran (Kerry)

Along with midfield partner Anthony Maher, Moran laid the foundations for his side's three-point success with a powerhouse display.

10. Paul Flynn (Dublin)

Flynn and his half-forward colleague Diarmuid Connolly were the only two Dublin players who did themselves justice against the Ulster champions.

11. Ryan McHugh (Donegal)

If Carlsberg did All-Ireland SFC semi-final displays ... the 20-year-old from Kilcar enjoyed a day to remember when hitting the much-vaunted Dubs for 2-2.

12. Diarmuid Connolly (Dublin)

Along with Flynn, Connolly gave an exhibition of long-range point-taking and finished the contest as his team's top scorer with five points.

13. Cillian O'Connor (Mayo)

Connor was on target with 2-5 for the Connacht champions but could have done with more support from his forward colleagues.

14. Kieran Donaghy (Kerry)

Mayo full-back Ger Cafferkey will have nightmares about 'Star' who fully justified Eamonn Fitzmaurice's decision to start him in the replay.

15. James O'Donoghue (Kerry)

Try as they might, Mayo were unable to come up with a plan to curb the Legion star's influence despite the best efforts of Keith Higgins.
