Could Mayo's first four-in-a-row of Connacht SFC titles since 1951 be a lucky omen in the county's quest to end its All-Ireland famine?

Mayo's impressive 3-14 to 0-16 victory over old rivals Galway in today's provincial final at Elvery's MacHale Park has strengthened the current team's ties with the 1951 crew who were, of course, the last Mayo side to lift the Sam Maguire.

James Horan's men produced a performance of power, pace and craft which would suggest they are capable of reaching the Holy Grail after coming so close in the 2012 and 2013. Mayo captain Andy Moran raised the JJ Nestor Cup this afternoon flanked by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny whose father Henry was a member of the first Mayo team to win Sam in 1936.

Another lucky omen perhaps?
