New York v Castlebar

April 26, 2012
There was great excitement in Castlebar last week when it was announced that the Mitchels U-17 Ladies will play New York All-Stars on Monday, July 23 in Gaelic Park.

New York are readying themselves for their entry into the All-Ireland minor championship next year and are busily preparing for the match with their Mayo guests.

The game will be played during Team Castlebar's trip to America, where 47 young footballers will play both gaelic and soccer in and around New York. Chairman of Team Castlebar, Daniel Caldwell, was delighted with the announcement and said that planning for the exciting trip is at an advanced stage.

"Playing New York in Gaelic Park will be a huge thrill for the girls and they cannot wait for day to come. They've been training hard for the past few months and have also made a huge fundraising effort. They're still looking for some individuals or companies to help them with sponsorship for their playing gear and we'd all like to thank Mayo.ie and Elverys for all their assistance in that regard already," he explained.

Team Castlebar will travel to New York on July 19 for ten days and as many of the girls on the tour play both gaelic and soccer it promises to be a busy schedule.

Castlebar Town will play in the Hudson invitational Tournament in upstate New York on July 21 and 22, before Mitchels take on New York and Rockland later in the week.

It's also expected that cultural events in conjunction with the Irish Consulate and the Mayo Association will be announced in the near future.
