Day of mixed emotions for injured Madigan It was a day of mixed emotions for Westport hurler Eoghan Madigan on Saturday last. On Friday, Madigan was on the bench for NUIG as they overcame a Joe Canning led LIT side in the Fitzgibbon Cup semi final. Twenty-four hours later, Madigan was in Crossmaglen as Mayo took on Armagh, while his college team-mates battled out a pulsating 1-25 to 1-24 win after extra time against WIT - earning the Mayo attacker a Fitzgibbon Cup medal. Madigan went on to score two points from play against Armagh from wing-forward before sustaining a bad hand injury just twenty minutes from the final whistle.
After his return to Mayo, a scan on his right-hand showed up a fracture of a metacarpel bone, which will rule Madigan out for the rest of the NHL campaign. The injury to Madigan brings the total on the injury list to five in the Mayo camp, as Shane Morley (Hamstring), Aidan Connolly (Quad), James Lowe (Appendix) and Cathal Freeman (Leg fracture) are all still on the treatment table. Mayo take on Derry next Sunday at 2.30 in McHale Park, Castlebar.
