Connacht Ladies Football

Connacht - Junior and Senior Teams in Action - June 19-21st It was a weekend of mixed reaction for the teams in Connacht. On Friday, June 19th Mayo played a gallant Sligo team in Swinford, Co. Mayo. Kick off was at 7.30 and both teams were prepared for a big game. A nice crowd was in attendance and the pitch was in great shape. As the teams took to the field we all knew it would be a game that would provide entertainment and skill to those who came out to see the game. Mayo may have gotten the better start but Sligo was not going down without a fight. Sligo remained close to the Mayo team and proved troublesome on many occasion. As the game progressed, Mayo seemed to find their gear and they began to pull away from the girls in the Black and White. Mayo played as a team, they worked hard and the experience and additional time they spent together proved to be one of the telling tales at the end of the game. Mayo came out clear victors in a score line that didn't really tell how competitive the game was but in order for Mayo to move on to the next game and become Connacht Champions they will have to take on the Galway girls who have already beaten them this year. Saturday was a different story, with the senior women of Mayo and Leitrim taking to the pitch as an opening act to the Mayo and Roscommon men's game. It was a strange yet trying time for both teams. As with all official games of this level, everything was like clockwork. Both teams approached the pitch and prepared for a picture before the epic battle was to begin. Some people may have thought that Mayo would have been nervous as they were facing a team that had improved over the years and had beaten Kildare in a recent challenge. If there were nerves it wasn't to be seen. The ladies of Mayo began the game as they intended to finish, with a bang! No team was going to stop Mayo. This was a game and the start to a campaign that they want to succeed in and hopefully do very well in. Leitrim were no match for the Mayo ladies and Mayo came out clear victors in the end. This is a game that both Galway and Sligo would have been watching with eager breath as they, themselves, prepared to do battle the very next day. The Galway and Sligo game was held in Tuam with a nice crowd in attendance. Both teams wanted to get to the Connacht Final. As the game began, both teams required a little time to settle. Sligo had taken charge and had Galway on the back foot midway through the first half. Galway however steadied and went in at the break with a four point lead. While Sligo came out after the break fighting, it proved too much and Galway came out victorious with their reward being a place in the Connacht Final. This will be held in Mayo on July 5th.
