O'Mahony unfazed by pressure

Mayo manager John O'Mahony
John O'Mahony admits that there is an expectation on him to deliver silverware to Mayo this year. Since returning to the Mayo helm at the end of 2006, O'Mahony has failed to win a Connacht or All-Ireland title, but this can be partly attributed to the fact that he has been carrying out extensive rebuilding work. "A Connacht title would be fantastic," he said ahead of Saturday's semi-final clash with Roscommon in Castlebar. "There was frustration that we didn't achieve that last year. I think that would be a great achievement for this year but I don't think it helps Mayo for everyone to say, 'O'Mahony must get a Connacht title this year or he's gone'." The former two-time All-Ireland winning boss with Galway admits that a manager with less experience might not have been given the same time to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours. He said: "In some respects, the history of Mayo football in the last number of years would suggest that maybe if it was a different manager, one with less experience, I might be gone before now. But does that help Mayo football? It doesn't. "It's not coming from me, and I'm not blaming anyone for it, I'm just acknowledging that it's there. I don't think it's helpful, though. Circumstances have changed a lot since I went into management. There's much more scrutiny and much more competition between media outlets. People have to ask, I suppose, where it's going to end."
