FL Div 1 round-up: Dreadnots and Geraldines to contest Cardinal O'Donnell Cup final

August 22, 2016

Dreadnots and Geraldines will battle it out for the Cardinal O'Donnell Cup after coming through their respective semi-finals.

The Clogherhead men were comfortable winners over Sean O'Mahonys as they came out on top by 1-18 to 1-7, while the Gers needed a late goal from Jim McEneaney to edge out Kilkerley Emmets on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-15.

Both the Dreadnots and O'Mahonys are among the favourites for the Senior Championship but it was the Clogher men who sent out a warning to their rivals with an impressive display.

After Paraic Smith and Conor Finnegan shared the opening two points, it was the Dreadnots who took charge with six unanswered points, with RichardKirwan and Anthony Williams among those on target.

David Dowling gave the Dundalk men a much-needed boost when he struck the first goal of the game on 28 minutes, but the Dreadnots replied with two points and ended the half with a 0-10 to 1-2 lead.

The Mid Louth side were in no mood to let the advantage slip and scores from Smith and Barry Faulkner helped stretch the advantage to eight points before a late goal from Peter Kirwan completed a very impressive win.

The second semi-final was a much closer affair but in the end the Geraldines denied Kilkerley victory when Jim McEneaney struck a late goal.

It was the Emmets who were quickest out of the blocks and with the help of points from Shane Lennon, Tadgh McEneaney and James Fegan, they had the first five scores on the board.

The Gers finally got off the mark through a Shane O'Hanlon effort and they soon had the gap down to two. The Haggardstown men continued their revival when Conall Hoey put his team ahead with the first goal of the game.

However Kilkerley responded well and a late point from Tadgh McEneaney tied the scores at 1-5 to 0-8 going into the break.

Points from Lennon and McEneaney helped the Emmets go three clear but once again the Gers came back to cut the deficit to one. With time running out it looked as if Kilkerley would hold out for victory on for Jim McEneaney's late goal to snatch a dramatic win for his side.
