JFC quarter-final: Seans too good for Westerns

August 15, 2016

Emmett Duffy - Sean McDermotts

Sean McDermotts 2-12
Westerns 1-5

Sean McDermott's made up for the disappointment of not making the division three league semi-finals with a comprehensive victory over a disappointing Westerns side in Darver on Friday evening.

The Westerns had to contend with a strong head wind and they were struggling to get the ball to their forwards as they racked up three wides in the opening fifteen minutes. Trevor Baylon was their focal point early on as he continuously ran at the Sean's defence trying to find an opening. And it was Baylon who started the move which led to the first goal of the game as his pinpoint pass found Aidan McGarrill who played in Johnny Lynch who made no mistake from close range.

That goal came slightly against the run of play and the Sean's soon resumed control scoring their own goal just two minutes later as the impressive Kevin Carroll burst through a static Westerns defence before expertly finding the bottom corner to make it 1-4 to 1-1 after fifteen minutes.

A couple of Tony Kelly points late in the half ensured the Sean's went in at the break with a 1-7 to 1-2 lead as they prepared to face the wind in the second period.

The Westerns got off to the worst possible start in the second half as the Sean's scored their second goal with Tony Kelly finding the back of the net after some great work by Kevin McMahon and Lorcan Ludden. A Sean McMahon point three minutes later left the scoreboard reading 2-8 to 1-2 with things beginning to look ominous for the Reaghstown men.

The Westerns emptied their bench as they tried desperately to find a way back into the game. However further points from Danny Commins and Kevin Carroll meant that the game was pretty much over as a contest with ten minutes remaining. The Sean's victory was rubber stamped with an excellent Aaron Myles point to set up a semi-final duel with championship favourites the Glen Emmets.
