June 27, 2016

Division 1 League Round 9

Mattock Rangers 2-11

St Fechins 1-11

Mattock Rangers proved too strong for St Fechins in this Saturday evening game in Collon. Veteran Christy Grimes was the difference between the teams. He accounted for six of his side's points and was the catalyst behind most of their attacks. Playing with the breeze the visitors opened the scoring through Paul King after the Mattock 'keeper had saved a shot from Joe Corrigan. Grimes equalised before two points from Ronan Holcroft and a single from Ryan Sheridan stretched the Fechins lead. Collon replied with two points, then fisted home a goal after hesitancy in the Fechins defence. The visitors fought back and scored four points in four minutes, frees from Holcroft, Ryan Sheridan and two excellent long range points from Joe Corrigan, to go two up. Grimes truck again either side of half time to draw level before Paul King restored the Fechins lead. A goal and four points from the Collon men in the next seven minutes sealed their victory. Even though Paul Mathews pulled a goal back and Corrigan scored two more outstanding points from play, St Fechins were chasing the game. A 45' from Grimesand a further Collon point finished the scoring. The home sides ability to take their opportunities was the difference between the teams. A series of excellent saves by Fechins keeper Mark Savage could only delay the final result
