FL Div 2: Battle for title to go right down to the wire

June 27, 2016

The battle for the Division 2 title looks certain to go right down to the wire with St Brides, Clan na Gael and Dundalk Gaels all on 15 points with just two games remaining.

As it stands, the Knockbridge side have the slight advantage on score difference following their 0-13 to 0-11 win over Oliver Plunketts at home on Saturday night.

Although fielding a depleted team due to many players on holidays St. Brides played well in the first half and led the visitors by 0-8 to 0-6 at the interval with Aaron Hoey and James Costello among those on target.

Scores from Trevor Walsh helped keep the Plunketts in contention throughout the second half but a late point from Conaill Devin sealed the win for the Brides.

Clan na Gael also moved on to 15 points thanks to a straightforward 2-16 to 1-7 win over Glyde Rangers.

A Billy Smith goal helped Clans get off the mark and they pushed on for the remainder of the half to build up a 1-8 to 0-3 lead, with Ciaran Sheridan among those pointing for Glyde.

The Dundalk men scored another early goal through Paul Martin as his side cruised to another victory, despite Paudie Carroll scoring a late goal for Glyde.

Dundalk Gaels also continued their push for league honours when they eased to a 1-14 to 0-4 win away to O Raghallaighs.

The visitors got on top from the opening moments with David Maloney kicked two points before a goal from Derek Crilly helped his side to a 1-8 to 0-2 half time lead.

A second half comeback was never on the cards as O Raghallaighs failed to lift their game and the Gaels went on to record a 13-point win.

St Josephs maintained their hopes of making the play-offs after scoring a 5-13 to 3-10 win over Nh Fionnbarra, a result that keeps the Togher side second from the bottom of the table.

The Finbarrs scored an early goal through Mairtin Murphy but the Joes hit back with a Daire Smith goal to take a 1-5 to 1-4 lead into the break.

The Joes burst out of the blocks in the second half and goals from David Mernagh and Jack Mulligan saw them hit 2-4 without reply to take a commanding 12-point lead.  Back came the Togher men and scored 1-6 without reply, the goal from Pádraic Murphy.

The Joes then struck two further goals through Jack Mulligan and Conall Smith to put themselves in a strong position and they held out for the win despite a late goal from a Bernard Osborne penalty.

Hunterstown Rovers are very much in the hunt for a top five finish after recording a 3-13 to 3-9 win over fellow challengers, St Mochtas.

It was Rovers who made the early running and went ahead with the help of a Paul Carrie goal, but Declan Byrne and Ultan Larney replied to send the Mochtas in at the break leading by 2-6 to 1-6.

Carrie's second goal had the teams level just after the restart and another goal from Brendan Lennon saw Rovers pull clear of the Mochtas and hold out for victory despite a late Nigel Farrell goal.

Young Irelands are also still in contention for a play-off place after they held out for a 0-13 to 0-12 win over Dundalk rivals, Na Piarsaigh.

Johnny Breen was the star of the show for the winners as he grabbed six points over the hour.

The Young Irelands were leading by 0-7 to 0-3 at the break but Na Piarsaigh hit back with the help of scores from Michael Woods and Alan McCartney. However, a late score from Aaron Rogers proved the difference as his side held out.
