FL1 round-up: Gers go top on score difference ahead of Dreadnots

Geraldines moved top of Division 1 on score difference ahead of Dreadnots when they inflicted a first defeat of the season on the Clogherhead side with a 2-12 to 2-10 win.

In a dramatic finale at Clogherhead, the Gers struck two late goals from Jim McEneaney and Glen Trainor to claim victory.

The Dreadnots got off to a great start and a goal from Pepe Smith helped them to lead by 1-4 to 0-2.

The Gers fought back with the help of points from Josh Arrowsmith andMcEneaney but a late James Califf point saw the Clogher men lead by 1-8 to 0-6 at half time.

It was looking good for the visitors when they reduced the gap to two points while theDreadnots were reduced to 14 men following the dismissal of Barry Faulkner.

However, almost immediately the hosts added a second goal from Smith.

That looked to be enough to secure the win but McEneaney and Trainor hit the net in injury time to steal victory.

St Marys maintained their push for a top four place when a late Alan Kirk goal helpedthem to a 1-10 to 0-12 win in Collon.

It what proved to be a very tight contest throughout, Christy Grimes opened the scoring only to see Darren Clarke level and that was the pattern for the remainder of the half. David Reid and Ronan Carroll were also on target as the Marys went in at thebreak leading by 0-6 to 0-5.

The teams continued to trade points during the second half but when David Reid firedover to make it 0-11 to 0-10 late in the game it looked as if Mattock would hold on forthe win. However, Kirk then popped up with the only goal of the game to give his sidea narrow win despite a late reply from Grimes.

A late goal from Jamie King followed by an excellent save from Mark Savage combined to give St Fechins a 2-8 to 0-12 win over St Patricks in Lordship on Saturday evening.

The Pats began well and points from Ray Finnegan and Danny O'Connor helped themlead by 0-5 to 0-1 early on. Bevan Duffy fired in a goal to keep his side in touch but points from Paddy Keenan helped his side lead by 0-8 to 1-4 at half time.

The hosts stretched the lead to three points with ten minutes remaining but Ronan Holcroft gave his side hope with two points before King rose to fist home a dramatic goal. A brilliant save by Savage seconds later ensured it was the winning score.

Newtown Blues continued their revival with a comprehensive 3-18 to 0-11 win at home to O'Connells to make it two victories on the bounce.

The first quarter was closely contested with Robert Quigley and Conor Culligan on target for the O'Connells, but Colm Judge, Ciaran Downey and Conor Brannigan replying for the Blues to send their team in leading by 0-9 to 0-5 at half time.

The Blues took complete control in the second half with goals from Alan Wilton and Colm Judge, before Conor Brannigan wrapped things up with the third goal in injury time.

Sean O'Mahonys suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Nh Mairtin when a goal fromJohn Clutterbuck helped the Monasterboice men to a 1-11 to 0-11 victory.

Stephen Kilcoyne and Benny Reilly scored for their respective sides in a close first half before a late strike from Stephen Fisher had the Dundalk men leading by 0-6 to 0-5 at half time.

The O'Mahonys were reduced to 14 men early in the second half but they still managed to increase the lead to three points. Nh Mairtin then found their rhythm and took the lead when Clutterbuck fisted home. The Mairtins lost Gavin Mooney and Mick Fanning to red cards but sealed the win with points from Patrick Halligan and Brian Berrill.
