Newtown Blues minors celebrate

Newtown Blues 3-11 Cooley Kickams 2-10

Newtown Blues overcame a stern test of their credentials to retain their Division one league title on Wednesday night last in Darvor.

Cooley Kickhams showed great hunger and determination to wrestle the title from the blues but just fell short in the end. Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half the blues hit 1:1 in the first few minutes with Ciaran Downey getting the goal. Cooley quickly responded with 3 points to stay in touch. The Blues scored a late goal from the Penalty spot with Emmet Carolan dispatching the ball into the net to take what looked like a commanding lead however Cooley won their own kick out and put together a great move that finished with a 3 pointer for themselves.

Half time score Blues 2-5 Cooley 1-4

Cooley started the second half as they finished the first with a flurry of points but 3 Ross Nally points kept the peninsula men at arm's length, then on the 44th minute Cooley struck for a quick goal and point to make the game level, what followed was a tense affair with both teams looking nervous and kicking some wides, then on the 52rd minute Declan McNamara latched onto a breaking ball and skipped by 2 men to fire into the back of the cooley net, another  Nally point had the Blues back in command and a great Dean Martin save sealed a great win for the Newtown Blues.
