FL1 round-up: Pat's move clear as Dreadnots drop point

May 25, 2015

St Patricks moved clear at the top of Division 1 when they turned in a strong second half display to defeat St Marys by 0-15 to 0-8 in Ardee while at the same time Dreadnots were dropping their first point at home to Mattock Rangers.

In a close and low-scoring first half, Darren Clarke was prominent for St Marys as he landed three points to send his side in leading by 0-4 to 0-3.

The Ardee men extended the advantage to two points at the end of the third quarter but an excellent point from defender Darren O'Hanlon inspired the Pats and they dominated the remainder of the game. With Aidan McCann, Daniel O'Connor and Evan White on target, they kicked the last seven points to claim victory.

Dreadnots dropped into second place when they lost their 100 per cent record after being held to a 12 points apiece draw at home to Mattock Rangers. It took a James Califf point in the dying moments to secure a share of the spoils.

The teams were well matched throughout the game and the first half ended level at six points each with Niall Callan and Anthony Williams trading late scores.

It was a similar story in the second half but Mattock looked to have secured the win when Christy Grimes and Adrian Reid pointed, but Califf had the final saw and the game ended in a draw.

The Dundalk derby between Dundalk Gaels and Sean O'Mahonys ended in a 1-9 each draw at The Ramparts.

The point was enough for the O'Mahonys to maintain their challenge for the play-offs as they now sit in fourth.

For the Gaels it was their first point of the season and enough to move them off the foot of the table.

O'Connells joined the teams on six points in the division as an eight minute second half purple patch, during which they scored 1-5 without reply, helped them to a 2-14 to 1-11 win over Newtown Blues.

The first half at The Grove was evenly balanced but a goal from Salem Rifaie saw the hosts take a 1-6 to 0-5 advantage at the break.

A John Kermode goal got the Blues right back into contention, but it was at that stage that the O'Connells tagged on 1-5 as Dean Stanfield hit the back of the net to secure the win.

Nh Mairtin claimed a second win of the campaign when they finished strongly to score a 2-10 to 0-10 win at home to Kilkerley Emmets.

The visitors dominated the early exchanges with Shane Lennon scoring the first four points, but the Mairtins hit back with a goal from a Luke Harrington goal to lead by 1-5 to 0-7 at half time.

The Emmets then hit the front early in the second half with three points, but they didn't score for the remainder of the half. The Mairtins took control at that stage and a Sam Mulroy goal sealed the win.

St Fechins picked up two valuable points against the O Raghallaighs recorded a 1-11 to 1-9 win at Pairc Naomh Feichin.

The teams traded points for much of the first half but it was the visitors who had the slight edge and went in at half time with a 0-6 to 0-5 advantage.

The Fechins made a bright start to the second half and a Colm O'Neill goal helped them pull five points clear. With three minutes remaining the O Raghallaighs got back in the game through a Ben Rogan penalty goal but the Fechins held out for a valuable win.
