FL2 round-up: tight at the top

May 25, 2015

Clan na Gael remain on top of a very tight Division 2 league after six rounds thanks to a 3-8 to 1-9 win over Geraldines at Haggardstown.

The Gers opened well but the Clans hit their first goal on ten minutes and went in at the break leading by 1-4 to 0-5.

Mark McGeown added a second early in the second half to open up a five-point lead, but Shaun Callan replied soon after to keep the Gers on contention. The home side lost Josh Arrowsmith to a red card and the Clans took advantage by seeing out the game with McGeown scoring the third goal late on.

Declan Byrne pointed from a late free kick to give St Mochtas a draw at home to Cooley Kickhams with the game finishing 0-9 to 1-6.

In a game where tempers flared on a number of occasions, Michael Rafferty scored a goal on 29 minutes to send his team in at the break with a 1-3 to 0-5 lead.

Despite losing Rafferty to a red card, Cooley extended their lead to three points with Brian White and Conor Rafferty to among the points. However, Byrne pointed either side of a score from Brendan Duff to claim a point for his side.

Hunterstown Rovers are just two points off the top of the table after a bright start inspired them to a 1-16 to 1-10 win at home to Na Piarsaigh.

This match was effectively over after ten minutes with the home side racing into a six point lead without a reply from Na Piarsaigh. At half time Rovers had stretched the advantage to 0-14 to 1-1, with David Boyle finding the net for the Dundalk men.

A Hunterstown goal midway thro the second half from Glen Matthews ensured that the visitors would be going home empty handed and give the home team two valuable points in their quest for a promotion place.

A last gasp point from midfielder Joe Flynn rescued a point for Young Irelands in this closely contested game at Pairc Eire Og. However, the Dundalk men will rue all their missed chances especially those in the first half when they were aided by the strong wind.

St Brides took advantage of those lapses as a fisted goal from Aaron Hoey saw them go in at the break leading by 1-4 to 0-5.

The home side edged ahead on 41 minutes through a controversial Dermot Mone goal, but the Brides fought back and looked as if they had done enough to win. However, it was Flynn who had the final say to level the game at 1-12 apiece.

Nh Fionnbarra are just two points off the top of the table after recording another impressive win, this time coming out on top against St Josephs by 2-11 to 1-12.

The result comes as a blow to St Josephs as they slip to eighth place after losing further ground on the pace-setters.

Oliver Plunketts picked up their first win of the season when they defeated fellow strugglers, Roche Emmets, by 2-14 to 1-11 in Drogheda.

The home side did the damage in the first half when goals from Emmet Kelleher and Trevor Walsh handed them a commanding 2-10 to 0-6 lead at the interval.

Roche proved more competitive in the second half and pulled a goal back through Niall McArdle but the Plunketts had too much in reserve and they held out for an important victory.
