Glen Emmets Damian Grimes
In the Louth Junior Football Championship, Glen Emmets, as expected, booked their place in the knock-out stages with a very comfortable 5-15 to 0-3 win over Wolfe Tones at the Gaelic Grounds on Friday night.

Despite the eventually winning margin, the opening ten minutes was very close with the Tones taking an early lead through Darragh Smith and it wasn't until the tenth minute that James Butler put the Emmets ahead.

However, once in front the Tullyallen men pushed on and saw Mark Noone hit the net on 12 minutes, followed by another goal from Ian Cusack who volleyed home on 16 minutes to send their side in at the break leading by 2-7 to 0-2. Patrick McKernon hit the second point for the Tones.

Goals from Jamie Farnan and Mark Noone in the opening ten minutes stretched the lead further with Noone completing his hat-trick eight minutes from time, with Gideon Lugoye accounting for the Wolfe Tones only reply.

Victory means that the Emmets will now play Lannleire in the quarter-final after the Dunleer men held off a spirited challenge from St Nicholas to reach the last eight on a 3-15 to 4-7 win.

Mark Dunne set the tone for a first half goal-fest when he hit the net after four minutes but three minutes later Gary Shevlin hit the first of his three goals.

Shevlin added another on 18 minutes and four minutes later the Nicks were level thanks to a third goal.

However, the Dunleer men responded well and goals from Paul Callan and Colin Murphy in the final two minutes of the half sent them in with a 3-10 to 3-3 lead.

The Nicks had a penalty five minutes after the break but Shevlin sent his effort wide, however, he did complete his hat-trick to keep the Nicks in contention. Lannleire maintained the advantage in the third quarter but had another escape when the Drogheda men sent a 55th minute penalty over the bar before holding out for the win.

Oliver Plunketts eased into the last eight of the Junior Championship with another comfortable win as they came out on top by 2-12 to 0-3 against Stabannon in the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday night.

As has been the case in their previous two games, the Plunketts got off to a slow start but they got into their rhythm before the break as a goal from Trevor Walsh helped them to lead by 1-5 to 0-3.

The Parnells offered little resistance in a disappointing second half as they failed to raise a flag, while the Drogheda men added a second goal through Dean Carolan.

As a result, the Plunketts will now face St Kevins bounced back from their defeat to John Mitchels by scoring a 3-15 to 0-8 victory over Cuchulainn Gaels to book their place in the quarter-finals.

The Philipstown side were always on top in this encounter against a Cuchulainn Gaels team that battled all the way. Darren McMullen scored the first goal of the game on 15 minutes and that was followed two minutes later by another from David Smith to send the Kevins in at the break leading by 2-8 to 0-2. On target for the Gaels were James Walker and Raymie Phillips.

Led by the hard-working Peter McCabe, the Omeath men competed well in the second half and will be happy with their return of six points, all from the boot of Eoin McDonald. However, a comeback was never on the cards and Smith added his second goal of the game to complete the win.

The final game of the Junior Championship group stages saw Sean McDermotts complete the line-up for the quarter-finals when they drew 1-13 to 2-10 with Dowdallshill at Dunleer.

A late point from Noel Finnegan gave the Dundalk men their first point of campaign and a share of the spoils was enough to send the Seans through despite them not being at their best.

In a well contested first half, Gerry McShane hit the net for the Hill to see his side trail by just 1-7 to 1-6 at half time with Peter Osborne scoring the goal for the Seans.

The Mountrush side stretched their advantage but Paul Gill added a second goal before Finnegan's late point saw the game finish level.
