JFC: Westerns impress against Tones

July 14, 2014

Stephen Boylan Westerns
WESTERNS 2-16
WOLFE TONES 1-1

Division Three pace-setters, Westerns, continued their good form into the Junior Championship as they had little difficulty in seeing off the challenge of Wolfe Tones at The Grove on Saturday evening.

The Reaghstown men have established themselves as one of the contenders for the Christy Bellew Cup and in turning in a solid display they made sure there was never any hint of an upset.

Once again the star of the show was Tommy Durnin with the Louth Junior player providing the early scores to settle his side as he went on to score a total of 1-11.

It was a difficult night for the Tones but they battled throughout and were unfortunate not to have more on the scoreboard as they finished with a total of 12 wides.

The very wet conditions following a downpour just before throw-in made it a challenge for both sides but it was the Westerns who coped best and eased into the lead with a couple of early points.

Durnin then put his side firmly in command with the opening goal of the game inside the opening quarter as the Westerns went on to finish the half with 1-7 on the board. The Tones battled throughout and created opportunities of their own but couldn't manage to raise a flag before the interval.

The second half followed a similar pattern with the Mid Louth side sending over some good points while John Lynch added a second goal.

The Tones were eventually rewarded for their efforts when Gideon Lugoye got them off the mark before Jamie McCormack found the net late on.
