St Marys found their shooting boots in the second half to claim an impressive opening day win over Geraldines in Ardee on Sunday afternoon.
The home side trailed by 0-6 to 0-4 at the end of a first half that saw them kicked 12 wides. However, made up for those misses with a fine second half display that began with Paudy Clarke scoring twice to level the game inside three minutes.
The Ardee men reeled off another six in succession from Ronan Carroll (2), Brian McCoy (2), Clarke and Dean Matthews to lead by 0-12 to 0-6 after 48 minutes.
The Geraldines got their first point of the half after 20 minutes and with the final four points shared, the Marys held out for a deserved victory.
St Marys had got the first half off to a great start with unanswered points from Paudy Clarke, Alan Kirk and Brian McCoy inside seven minutes.
The Gers responded with two points before Clarke was denied a goal by an excellent save, while a quick Gers counter attack then saw the Haggardstown side denied a three-pointer by the post.
After the Geraldines took the lead, Dean Matthews levelled at four points each from a free, but with St Marys recording 12 first half wides, the visitors kicked the last two points of the half to lead by 0-6 to 0-4.
Barry Faulkner gave an excellent display at the back for the winners alongside Paul Malone, while Donal Matthews had a good outing in attack.
