Dundalk Young Irelands 1-11
O Raghallaighs 0-05
Dundalk Young Ireland's comfortably overcame the challenge of St. Kevins in a scrappy game in Philipstown on Friday evening. The Kevins started the game brightly and took the lead after David Smith pointed for the home-side. The Irelanders had made a poor enough start to the match with some poor handling at crucial times. However, they got their running game going midway through the half and scored 5 unanswered points and grabbed a lead that they never looked like losing. In fact they had a couple of half chances at goal following strong runs from midfield from Peter Nixon, however they didn't come off. Liam Boylan then grabbed point for the Kevins to close the gap to three points. However the Irelanders responded brightly with a pointed free from Derek Maguire before the same player goaled near the end of the half. There was a break in play as Aaron Rogers was struck off the ball and required treatment.
Half-time: Young Irelands 1-06 St. Kevins 0-02
Both teams hit wides at the start of the second half before Maguire scored from a free for the Irelands. The impressive Liam Boylan got two points in a row for the Kevins (1 f). However, the Irelanders came back strongly with points from Sean Rafferty and Maguire. The Kevins seemed to run out of steam in the final quarter and although Boylan got another point for them, the Irelanders finished very strongly and got 2 more points from Nicholas O'Connor and Connor McCrory.
The Irelander's will be very happy to come away from Philipstown with the two points and stay on top of the league, especially considering the fact that they were missing a number of players for tonights match.
Best for the Irelanders were Michael Mone at wing back and Michael Shields at wing forward, while Liam Boylan stood out for the Kevins.
