Cathedral are new senior league sponsors

November 30, 2008
Cathedral Financial Consultants Limited were recently unveiled as the new sponsors of the Louth senior football league. Barry Oliver, Director and Senior financial adviser with the company and son of Louth county board chairman Paddy, explains more. Cathedral Financial Consultants Ltd, which has offices in both Dundalk and Drogheda, recently underlined its support for Louth GAA by taking over as the new sponsors of the Louth senior football league. As a Co. Louth-based company, Cathedral Financial Consultants Limited are delighted to be in a position to support the local GAA scene and sponsor the Cardinal O'Donnell Cup which is one of the most sought-after prizes in Louth GAA each year and is currently in the possession of Cooley Kickhams who, in fact, have been senior league champions for the past three years. The Cooley peninsula club may have fared considerably well in the league in recent years and made it a hat-trick of Division 1 successes on October 26 last when they defeated county champions Newtown Blues by 1-7 to 0-8 at Clan na Gael. Gary Thornton's charges were full value for their victory considering they passed up on three glorious goal chances before Australia-bound Brian Donnelly scored the only goal three minutes from the end. Blues goalkeeper Mikey Harte was inspired form, denying David Thornton in the closing minutes of the first half, and he somehow kept out a Sean McDonald effort from point blank range nine minutes after the restart. In between, McDonald fired another good chance wide of the target. The second of those misses came when Cooley were still trailing by five points, 0-3 to 0-8, but thereafter they assumed almost total control of the midfield sector to such an extent that the Blues failed to score for the last 29 minutes of the contest. Still, they didn't start to edge their way back into proceedings until the final quarter when a three-point scoring burst at that stage turned out to be just as crucial to the final outcome as Donnelly's late winning goal. "Cathedral are proud and delighted to be the new sponsors of the Louth senior football league. We're looking forward to it and wish all the competing teams the best of luck for 2009," says Cathedral Financial Consultants Director Barry Oliver. "We have a very loyal support base in Louth and throughout the North-East, many of whom are GAA members and supporters, and this is our way of repaying that loyalty." Barry is no stranger to the GAA himself, being a son of Louth county board chairman Paddy Oliver. Paddy has served the position for the past four years, during which time his overseeing of the development of the Darver Centre of Excellence was arguably his finest achievement. A former player with St. Patrick's and their underage club Valley Rangers, Barry rejoiced in the Lordship club's senior championship victories of recent years.
