Former Longford skipper hits back

December 20, 2007
A former Longford senior football captain whose career was cut short through suspension has lodged an appeal with An Bord Pleanala against the retention of development work carried out at Pearse Park. Liam Madden captained the Midlanders during the seventies and had a distinguished career playing club football with Longford Slashers, Clonguish, Enniskillen Gaels and UCD, where he won an All-Ireland club medal. However, Mr Madden's football career came to an end after he was suspended for attending a soccer match between Longford Town and Irish League side Cliftonville. The dual star was one of the last players to suffer such a fate and has been annoyed with the GAA ever since. He now, has admitted to the Longford Leader that making the objection to the development work gave him the opportunity "to get his own back" on the GAA. Madden is an Architect and is making the objection claiming that the construction of an entrance gate in Pearse Park enters onto one of his clients property and that trespass was carried out when a hedgerow was removed.
