O'Byrne Cup: McGee reels in Athlone
January 09, 2012
Longford 0-13
Athlone IT 1-9
Francis McGee scored 0-5 as Longford staged a comeback victory over Athlone IT in Ballymahon.
The students were much sharper in the opening half and opened up a 1-4 to 0-4 lead after full forward Frank Burke scored the only goal in the 21st minute. But Longford - who had lost heavily to Westmeath in a midweek challenge - responded with points from McGee and Brian Kavanagh to trail by the minimum at half-time, 0-7 to 1-5.
Points from Adam Caul and Anton Sullivan put daylight between the sides once again on the restart, but the Division 4 champions stormed back with efforts from McGee (two), JJ Matthews, Sean McCormack and Shane Mulligan to take the spoils.
