West Junior A Hurling Championship:
St. Kieran s 0.17 Monagea 1.7
The Junior hurlers get their campaign off to a flying start on Saturday evening with an excellent seven point victory over Monagea. Having come down from intermediate in 2011 we knew we would have it all to do on the night. We began the brighter with early scores from Danny Collum and James Muckell to settle the early nerves and give us an early lead playing with the assistance of a strong breeze in the opening half. We took control of the game around the middle quarter with Anthony Molyneaux and Pat Windle dominating proceedings in the middle of the field providing a plentiful supply of possession to the full forward line where Johnny McCarthy was giving the Monagea defence a lot to think about and had to resort to persistent fouling. Donie Nolan duly capitalized on this possession and made the most of his free taking opportunities. At the back our defence worked tirelessly limiting Monagea s scoring opportunities thanks to some hard work from Billy Breen, Paudie McCarthy and Brendan McCarthy who were ably assisted in the half back line by Mike Windle, Sean Windle and Mike Flynn. Going in at the break it was going to take a huge effort to come away with the win as we were playing against the elements in the second half despite having built up a three point lead in the opening half. As the second half ensued we continued the good work of the opening half and weather the Monagea storm. We got off to the better start in the second half increasing our lead further before a Monagea fight back. Our lead could have increased further but Donie Nolan s penalty effort was excellently saved from the Monagea keeper. As the game drew to a close we fought tooth and nail to defend our lead. To the defence s credit they stood up to the challenge and reduced Monagea s scoring opportunities to a minimum. Saturdays win was vital if we are to advance from the groups phases of the championship this season and qualify for the knockout stages. Next up we play Feenagh/Kilmeedy in the West Intermediate Championship next Tuesday evening.

West Junior B Football League: St. Kieran s 1.7 Newcastlewest 0.10
The junior footballers continued their promising run of form on Sunday evening with an evenly contested encounter against local rivals Newcastlewest in the west league to keep alive their chances of advancing to the knockout stages of the completion. Fielding a side mixed with a blend of youth and experience with three members having played in last year s county minor final the side worked hard throughout in search of a result. Newcastlewest got off to the better start and it looked as if it could have been a long night but we soon settled and began to control the opening half playing against a stiff breeze. We lead going in at the break thanks to scores from Cian Shorten and a well finished goal from Ian Mackessy which gave us a 1.4 to 5 points lead at half time. As the second half ensued Newcastlewest began to get on top and soon reduced our advantage. To the lads credit they battled hard throughout to get back into the game. The backs worked hard to reduce Newcastlewest s scoring opportunities while at midfield Sean Windle and Tommy Carr worked themselves into the ground against a tough Newcastlewest pairing who held a slight height advantage. As the game drew to a close we worked tirelessly to get possession to reduce the deficit. Thanks to a last ditch free from Cian Shorten we came away with a share of the spoils and still remain unbeaten in our three games this season. the manner of the performance was very promising considering we had a number of changes from the side who overcame Ballysteen. Next up we play Athea in our final league game where a result is essential if we are to advance to the league semi final.
