Last Thursday evening a very important meeting took place at the University of Limerick were a Limerick City GAA Club hurling forum took place
To look at the future direction of how we promote and develop hurling in Limerick City. It was great to see that each club in the City division was represented by at least 5 adult club members on the night as the information and feedback generated will shape hurling in the City. Format for the evening was an opening address by Sean Walsh chairperson Munster GAA Council. A group discussion on the various challenges and opportunities around developing hurling in Limerick City which was facilitated by Joey Carton (De la Salle & Waterford) and Munster GAA council games manager and then a key note address was delivered by All Ireland winning manager and GAA pundit Cyril Farrell (Galway) the closing address was by Ger Downes GDA of Limerick City and who organises the event he reiterate how vitally important it is that each club was well represented on the night so as that we, as a hurling community, can openly discuss, assist and plan how we all together can develop the game in Limerick City in the years ahead. Ger thanked the clubs who returned their club questionnaires Ger opened his address by introducing himself as the new Games Development administrator for hurling in Limerick City replacing the role filled previously by Pat Culhane and has been in place since late March and have since been busy reviewing the current state of hurling in Limerick City. He told delegates that there is no doubt that hurling in the City has experienced a huge surge in playing numbers and standards over the last five years. The success of Limerick clubs and schools has been well noted but it is now time to look at how we can sustain and grow that success and more importantly spread it through to all clubs in the City division Ger believe that we must now set in place a plan for the future of your club and for Limerick hurling and to achieve this however we need to conduct a review of all activity, both on and off the pitch, in each club and in each department in which Limerick GAA operates. Only through open, honest and frank discussion with grassroots members offering their real and constructive experience, feedback and analysis and by acting instead of talking, that we can in Limerick unite together for a common purpose, which is the greater good of hurling in Limerick. He also mention that the time is now right for hurling in Limerick City to take the next progressive steps forward, to further develop and promote the game in the Counties largest populated division and he asked all clubs to hold an open general meeting of club members pulling together all strands of the club Ger also told the clubs that there are also free to provide additional feedback where your members feel there is greatest need for further development around the game of hurling in Limerick city back to him. The next board meeting will take place on this Monday evening at 9pm in the Woodfield house hotel Ennis Road.
