Galvin comeback hopes fade

Limerick's John Galvin
Limerick manager Maurice Horan is resigned to being without star midfielder John Galvin for the championship.

After missing last year's championship with a cruciate ligament injury, Galvin made a brief return during this year's Allianz League, only to suffer a recurrence of the injury against Fermanagh on April 1. There were hopes that he may be able to play in the championship, but those hopes have all but evaporated with just over a week to go to the Treaty County's Munster SFC opener against Waterford.

"It's not an injury that is going to improve on its own. The specialist told him it's up himself really. He will know if it feels right, if it's strong enough," Horan explained to the Irish Sun.

"He has started back doing some light jogging but at same time it's still very unlikely he will play championship football this summer. It is going to be up to John to decide. It's severely torn so it's not going to regenerate itself. It's nearly as bad as it can get without being torn."

Horan is hoping another of his midfielders, Jim Donovan, and star attacker Stephen Kelly will recover from hamstring and knee injurie respectively in time for the Gaelic Grounds clash with the Deise on Sunday week.

He said: "They are touch and go, they haven't played a lot of football but hopefully they will be okay."
