Limerick appointment still weeks away

August 26, 2010
Limerick's new hurling manager is unlikely to be in place before the October meeting of the county board.

Limerick officials are adamant that they won't rush the Independent Appointments Committee, comprising former hurlers Damien Quigley and Paudie Fitzmaurice, and Dairygold CEO Jim Woulfe, into making a decision.

Dave Keane, Gary Kirby, Ciaran Carey, Leo O'Connor, TJ Ryan, Val Murnane and outgoing manager Justin McCarthy are all in the frame for the job, but it is still unclear whether the committee have targeted their own candidates for interview.

It was expected that the committee would be in a position to put a name forward for ratification at the next county board meeting on September 14, but it now seems likely that the appointment will not be ratified until the October meeting on October 12.

Limerick secretary Mike O'Riordan said: "We are waiting for confirmation from the committee and they could be back to us by early September with a name. That's what we would hope but we're leaving it up to them to decide.

"We won't be onto them to put them under pressure to hurry things up. If we have to wait until October, that's what we'll do. We've left it at their discretion as to how many interviews they do and they will return to us with the right man for the job."

Meanwhile, the Limerick football board have begun the process of finding a replacement for Mickey Ned O'Sullivan, who stepped down as manager last week. An appointment is likely to be held off until the October meeting also.
