Sean Finns Rathkeale club notes

Sean Finns exit Junior Football championship
Our junior footballers were extremely disappointed as they exited the West Championship at the hands of Monagea at the quarter-final stage last Saturday night in Newcastlewest after extra-time. The sides were level 0-5 apiece at half time and level again at full time  1-9 (Sean Finns) to 0-12 (Monagea).  We struggled to cope with Monagea's greater strength and physicality through-out the game and when the game went to extra time this struggle proved to be too much. Monagea went on to win on a final score of 2-10 to 0-20. We wish them well in the remainder of the championship. The early loss of both Trevor Nolan and Damien Quaid, through injury during the first half of normal time, were both factors in the defeat as was the dismissal of Johnny Markham in extra-time. While the championship exit was very disappointing for all concerned, the disappointment will be eased with the knowledge that we did manage to win the West & County league during the season, so 2010  will go down as a year of improvement and who knows what 2011 holds in store.
For the record out team was as follows: Ollie Byrnes, Gerard Frawley, Sean O'Shea, Gary Enright, Patrick Sheahan, Damien Quaid, Dean Maune, Keith Harnett, Trevor Nolan, Sean Sheahan, Johnny Markham, Eoghan O'Connor, Stephen Power, Mark O'Sullivan, Barry O'Riordan. Subs: Michael O'Sullivan, Michael Keating, Sean White, Timmy Hogan. Thanks to the management team of Mike Barrett, Pat Neville, Niall Ryan, Johnny Mooney for their work and commitment to the team during the year. Thanks also to Sandra Quaid & Mary Sheahan for their first-aid assistance to this team throughout the season.  Best wishes to Trevor Nolan who sustained a nasty looking knee injury. Hopefully he will be back to full fitness soon,

Minor Hurling - Mick Nevilles in West Minor-A Final
Well done to the players and management of Mick Nevilles (St Marys & Croagh/Kilfinny combination) who overcame St Colmans (St Kierans & Askeaton combination) in Coolcappagh on Tuesday night 17-Aug in a close and exciting game with some good score-taking on both sides. Referee was Sean Harnett.
We led 1-08 to 1-06 at half time and held out at the end, despite some tremendous pressure, to win on a final score-line of 2-12 to 1-12.  This win qualifies for the West Minor-A Final against Drom/Broadford on Friday night 27-Aug. Best wishes James Connie O'Connor and Tom Quaid and their charges. We appeal to all our supporters to come along and support the future stars of the club next Friday night.
Team: David Lynch, James Chawke, Cathal O'Sullivan, Richard Cunningham, Adrian Stackpool, Barry Quiad, Rory Flaherty, Eoin O'Donnell, David Mooney, Niall Flaherty, Sean Sheahan, Darren Jones, John Casey, Brendan O'Connor, Michael White. Subs used: Brian Hannon

Minor Football
The minor football team of Sean Finn's played this Tuesday 24th Aug in Ballyhahill against the team of St. James (combination of Cappagh & Ballyhahill).  Results are not available at time of going to press.  We also have another football game this weekend when we meet Dromcollogher/Broadford in the Bog Garden at 7pm on Sunday 29th August. Best of luck to all concerned.

Under 16 Hurling
St. Mary's under 16's will play Ahane in the quarter-final of the Championship  on Tues 31st August in Ahane.  Time will be announced at training. Best wishes to Pat Madden and Brian Wilmott and all the players.

Under 16 Football team qualify for the final
Sean Finn's Under 16 Football team played Killuta Gaels on Wednesday 18th Aug  at South Liberties GAA grounds in the Championship Semi-Final.  Having been  beaten by Killuta Gaels on their last encounter, the win was all the sweeter when the final whistle blew.  Training will continue under the watchful eyes of Rob White and Barry O'Riordan  as these lads prepare for the Championship final.

Under 8 Hurling Blitz
Rathkeale Under 8 hurlers travelled to Ballingarry on Thursday evening the 12th of August to take on Ballingarry and Ballinacurra. Two great matches followed as our hurlers put all of their skills on display. The three Sheahan brothers (Mark, Michael and Niall) and the two Dalton sisters (Emma and Ashling) put in strong performances all over the field. Niall stopped many shots in the goal and took a lot of pressure off the backs with some long puck outs. Evan Barrett, Philip Brennan and Patrick Johnson played some great hurling and knocked in a few goals between them. Emma Dalton also got her name on the score sheet. Tremendous credit should also be given to young Dylan Farrell who put in a great effort and is a player to watch for the future. Thanks to all our young players for travelling and to Ballingarry for organising a very successful blitz.

Under-21 Football
We are graded in the premier All-county division for this competition. It is due to commence on 7th Sept with a away game against Fr Caseys. This will be quickly followed by 2 home games (v Bruff) on 14th Sept and (v Mulcair Gaels) on 21-Sept.  Top team from this group makes the semi-finals while the 2nd & 3rd placed teams will play the 2nd/3rd placed teams in the other group in the quarter finals. Qualification for the knock-out stages is well within our abilities. At this stage, it is vital that all U21 footballers are training so if you intend to play, get on to the management team of Niall Ryan, Dinny Guiney or Seamus Dollery and start showing up at training.

U14 Football
On Monday night 23rd August, our U14 football team played in the Co. Quarter Final versus Ballybrown. Match report of this game will be available next week.

Congratulations
Many congratulations to the many children from the Rathkeale Community Games Area who performed to such a high standard in Athlone at the National Finals last weekend. Congratulations to the teams and individual performers, their managers and the Rathkeale  Community Games Organisation on their well-deserved success.
