St. Mary's /Sean Finns GAA Club (Rathkeale)
March 02, 2010
Bord na nOg Awards night, a huge success!!
This year's Bord na nOg Awards night took place on Friday 26th February at Rathkeale House Hotel at 7.30pm and was very much enjoyed by all who attended. Refreshments were served to all present and it was wonderful to see so many under-age players with their families. It is clear that a bright future lies ahead for St. Mary's/Sean Finn's Club with so many enthusiastic young players who are proud to wear the blue and white jersey at every opportunity.
Our Chairman of Bord na nOg, Willie Coffey welcomed everyone and spoke of the delight he feels when he sees our youngsters being trained by coaches from within the community who give so freely of their time and expertise. He also spoke for all present in thanking very sincerely the many sponsors who so generously make contributions throughout the year, to help in the running of the club. We are extremely lucky to have so many in our community who appreciate how expensive it is to run a club, and who provide financial support on a regular basis. We are all indebted to the business community, and we must support those who support us. Our recently published 2010 Bord na nOg calendar was supported with fantastic enthusiasm as was the sponsored cycle in the Autumn. A special thanks is due to the Rathkeale and District Credit Union who so generously sponsored the trophies for this awards night.
It was great to see players from our senior teams making the presentations to the younger teams. We had motivating speeches from Pat O'Donnell, (Chairman of the West Board), Fr. Willie Russell, Pat Sheahan (Club Secretary), Tom Keating (Bord na nOg Secretary) and Damien Quaid (Captain of the West, Co. and Munster Jun-B Hurling team). Gerry Molyneaux was a most capable MC.

Kevin has a great eye to read the game and always seems to be able to find space both for him and for others. What an impact he has made in his first year with Sean Finn's. Kevin is a player with a very bright future ahead of him.
Under 14 Football
U14 Football Merit Award: James Moran
This player is always happy to oblige when asked to do something. James is always willing to do his best and is willing to fill any position when called upon.
U14 Footballer of the Year: Emmett Walsh
Emmett is not short of talent and speed to get the ball up the field and over the bar. He played in many positions but his true talent showed in full back and in the dressing room before a game when he often gave a motivating team-talk.
Under 16 Football
U16 Football Merit Award: Eddie Ryan
Health particularly amongst our young is normally taken for granted. Imagine lining out for your football team on a fine Summer evening and the very next day, lying on a Dublin Hospital bed, seriously ill. He was brave when he played in goals and full forward for Sean Finn's, but it was nothing to the bravery he has shown in dealing with his illness. We all wish Eddie a full and speedy recovery to full health.
U16 Footballer of the Year: Jason Jones
This quiet unassuming young man is usually in the background amongst his noisy colleagues, but certainly to the forefront where it matters most, on the playing field. Jason rarely if ever misses a training session, is great to listen and even better to apply. He never utters a word or performs a deed in defiance. He is a resolute clever defender.
Under 8 Hurling
The Under 8 Hurling Team were looked after by Mike Sheahan, Karen Fahy and Alan Johnson who very kindly sponsored sliotars and hurley grips for each of the panel of players. Under 10 Hurling

U 10 Hurling Merit Award: Katie Brennan
Katie has shown consistent improvement during the year, always willing to learn and practice new skills. She is a great trier who always puts in a great effort in matches.
U10 Hurler of the year: Padraig Power
Padraig is a great team player, always eager to learn and shows great determination on the field. His speed makes it almost impossible for opponents to mark him. He put in a huge effort all season attending the hurling academy, training sessions and matches.
Under 12 Hurling
The Under 12 Hurlers had a 100% success record for 2009 and were looked after by James Feane, Kevin O'Sullivan, and Tom Keating. Like the U12 Footballers this team had their highlight on winning their final in the Gaelic Grounds. Patrick Sheahan presented the following with their medals: Andrew White, Marie Sheahan, Thomas Collins, Gearoid Mulcaire, Christopher Mulcahy, Darragh O'Grady, Adrian Brennan, Brian Keating, Enda Walsh, Jamie Tierney, George Mulcahy Jack Feane, Mikey Morrissey, Seamus Keating, Michael Enright, Eric Jacobsen, Darragh Curtin, Brandon Tierney and Brian White.
U12 Hurling Merit Award: Marie Sheahan
The only female player in the 2009-hurling panel, Marie will be missed by her teammates in the coming season. She has played in the forward line with great skill and confidence. She has often got vital scores and lifted the spirit of the team. No matter what size the opposition back-line have been, Marie showed some tremendous battling qualities.
U12 Hurler of the Year: Thomas Collins
This player has always given 100% at training and on the field of play. He has played in various positions from backs to forwards and on occasion he has played in goals. Thomas has shown tremendous skill, leadership and determination throughout the year.
Under 14 Hurling
The Under 14 hurlers had three medals to receive. They won the All County Hurling League (Div 3) as well as the Kildimo Hurling Tournament and were runners up in the Liam English Tournament. The team mentors were Brian Wilmott, Kevin O'Sullivan and Brendan O'Reilly. Medals were presented by Eoghan O'Connor and Ciaran English to the following players: Patrick Cunningham, Bud White, Andrew White, Patrick Wilmott, Bob Keogh, Eric Jacobsen, Thomas Collins, Peter Brennan, Jamie Tierney, Joe Sweeney, James Moran, Steve O'Reilly, Paudie Moran, Leonard Meskell, Evan Lenihan, Emmett Walsh, Tom Ryan, Gearoid Mulcaire, Patrick Naughton and Thomas White.
U14 Hurling Merit Award: Leonard Meskell
Leonard is always one of the first players to be at training, ready and waiting to get stuck in. In every game Leonard gave everything. He marked his opponents well regardless of their size and could be relied upon to clear the ball whenever it came his way.
U14 Hurler of the Year: Steve O'Reilly
This player is super- fit. As soon as he puts on his helmet and picks up his hurley, he runs either with the sliotar on the boss or with his hurley chasing back to cover. The more knocks Steve got during a game the more determined he seemed to be. They seemed to drive him on even more to try and win and with a puff of his inhaler, up he got and ran some more.
Under 16 Hurling
U 16 Hurling Merit Award: Jack Hennessy
This man never lets the side down and always gives 100%. He has shown consistent improvement and attended all matches. Jack is a hurler of strength.

This skillful player has a fantastic 1st touch. He has been influential in all matches and played in the midfield position. Michael also played with St. Brendan's Minor hurling team in 2009. In addition to being our Under 16 Hurler of the year, Michael represented Sean Finn's on the County Under 16 Football team of 2009 as well as being part of the Sean Finn's County 12-a-side Minor Champions team of 2009.
