Munster title would lift Limerick, says Galvin

John Galvin believes victory in tomorrow's Munster SFC final against Cork would do wonders for Limerick GAA. Both hurling and football have been playing second fiddle to rugby in the battle for the hearts and minds of Limerick youngsters in recent years, but the long-serving midfielder is in no doubt that a first Munster football title in 113 years would change the sporting landscape in the city and county. "It would be absolutely fantastic for Limerick football," said Galvin, who lost Munster finals to Kerry in 2003 and 2004. "The farther you get in the championship, the more promotion of the team in the papers and stuff like that. "At the moment, any player growing up in Limerick is out kicking a rugby ball and they all want to be Ronan O'Gara or Paul O'Connell or Peter Stringer. "It would be great for Limerick football to try and get back in the papers. It would really drive it on if we could win something. If we could get the young fellas pretending to be one of the footballers or one of the hurlers." The long-serving midfielder is under no illusions about the task facing the Treaty County, who go into the final as rank outsiders against a Cork team that powered past Kerry. "They look very, very good. In the last minute or two of the Kerry match, they were still going 100mph up and down the field. They are well training and are favourites to win the All-Ireland. "But it's absolutely fantastic to be playing a team like that. You're setting the bar and you'll see where you stand with the rest of the country."
