Junior-A Football Championship game ends in a draw We played the 2nd round of the West Championship against Glin on Saturday 27th June in Askeaton. Glin had the upper hand on our last two encounters, so a big challenge was on the cards. We started with the benefit of a strong wind in the first half. By the interval the score showed Sean Finn's winning with 1:08 to 1:02 and lots to cheer about from both sides. The second half was a big ask for our lads against the wind and both sides determined to play their best. At the final whistle the crowd were all sent home happy as the game ended in a draw with 1:10 for Sean Finn's to 2:07 for Glin. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Damien Quaid who came off injured at half time. The panel of players and scorers was Johnny Mooney, Brian Duggan, Gary Enright, Gerard Frawley, Patrick Sheahan, Damien Quaid, Paul (Deucy) Hogan, Johnny Markham, Sean O'Shea, Alan O'Shea, Neil (Gus) Ryan, Mark O'Sullivan (1:01), Mike O'Sullivan, (0:02), Eoghan O'Connor, (0:06), Timmy O'Connor, (0:1), James Mullane & Patrick Costello. Minor Hurling Championship Our inaugural game as St. Brendan's - joint team of Askeaton/Ballysteen and St. Mary's was played against Dromcolligher on last Friday 26th June at 7pm in Dromcollogher. This was a good exciting game with players from the two clubs getting used to playing together. 5 players as follows Sean White, Robert White, Sean Sheahan, Richard Cunningham and Eoghan O'Connor all of whom played their part very well represented St. Mary's. At half time the sides were very close with St. Brendan's marginally ahead with 0:07 to Drom/Broadford's 0:06. The second half saw some fantastic scoring for both sides but the local side won with a score of 3:12 to the 2:10 scored by St. Brendan's. The game against Allaughaun Gaels (Tour and Templeglantine) that had been postponed has now been refixed for Wednesday 8th July in Tournafulla at 7.30pm. U8 Hurling Training continues on Monday nights at 6pm in Neville Park where new members, (boys and girls) are always welcome. Last week on Monday 22nd, our Under 8 hurlers played some challenge games. Our panel of 18 players made the long and windy trip to Ballingarry!! We were made most welcome and it was decided to play 2 matches of 9-a-side. The evening was lovely and the pitch was in great condition. The first match was a very good contest. Our lads put in an enormous effort and laid siege to the Ballingarry goal but could not breach their defence. In the end Ballingarry came out on top of a great game of hurling where skill and determination were abundant on both sides. Our younger, future stars played the second match. These lads gave it everything and in the last few minutes, they gave way to a stronger Ballingarry outfit. Indeed in both matches travel sickness and home-advantage had a major effect!!! The following is the panel of players who all played so well: Paudie Mulcaire, Mark Sheahan, Aaron Hogan, Michael Brennan, Sean Malone, Patrick Johnson, Colin Fitzgerald, Emma Dalton, Michael Mulcahy, Nathan Tesky, Evan Barrett, Niall O'Shea, Michael Sheahan, Niall Sheahan, Aisling Dalton, Luke Johnson, Danny Dunne and Orla Fahy. Well played to all involved. Many thanks to Mike Sheahan , Karen Fahy and Alan Johnson who give of their time and skills week-in-week-out as these youngsters learn the skills of hurling. Training continues on Monday nights at 6pm in Neville Park where new members, (boys and girls) are always welcome. Under 8 Football Our u 8 footballers played Feohanagh / Castlemahon on Wednesday night in Mick Neville Park. They played very well getting some fine scores and they won easily. Cul-Camp This year the Cul-Camp will take place on the week commencing 20th July. Contact Tom Keating immediately if you have a child interested in participating. Munster Football Final Best wishes to Limerick Footballers when they aim for victory in the Munster Final. GAA 125th Anniversary - TORCH RUN To celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the GAA, Munster Council are organising a Torch Run on the eve of the Munster Senior Hurling Championship Final 11 July, 2009, from the Home of Michael Cusack in Carron, Co.Clare to the location of the Foundation Meeting in Hayes Hotel, Thurles. The GAA calls all clubs en route to be part of this historic occasion in Clare, Limerick and Tipperary, ending at Hayes Hotel, Thurles. We can be part of a wonderful celebration. Limerick County Board are asking each club within the county to bring at least thirty to forty 12-14 year olds dressed in their club colours, flags, banners etc., to the Gaelic Grounds on 11th July. It is envisaged that all 69 Limerick Clubs will parade longside the Torch from the Gaelic Grounds, over Sarsfield Bridge, up William Street as far as the jail. It sounds like a wonderful occasion of celebration. 12 to 14 year-olds who would like to represent St. Mary's/Sean Finn's should give their names to our Bord na nOg Secretary, Tom Keating as soon as possible. Sympathy: We extend our sympathy to the family of Con (Bett) Enright of Duxtown on their bereavement last weekend. His wife Breda, sons Con and Mike, daughters Tina and Sheila, brothers and sisters, as well as a wide circle of family and friends will sadly miss Con. He was one of life's true gentlemen and a dedicated supporter of GAA events throughout his life and this legacy continues on with his children and grandchildren. In his younger days he played with distinction with St. Kieran's and also played with the Limerick Co. Senior Team. He will no doubt be watching and cheering from the Great Sideline in the Sky on Sunday as Limerick try to seal victory in the Munster Final. Ar dheis De go raibh a Anam.
