FBD Connacht league: derby spoils for Leitrim
January 15, 2012
Leitrim scored a superb 1-8 to 1-5 success against neighbours Roscommon at Ballinamore.
It was 0-5 to 1-1 in favour of the hosts at the break, a thoroughly-deserved lead for the side that had played against the breeze.
Roscommon recorded seven wides in that first half, including three from Donie Shine frees and they were fortunate when Ger Heneghan's deflected goal before the break kept them in touch.
James Glancy and Paddy McGowan were on target for the impressive hosts during that opening 35 minutes and lively Leitrim were full value for their interval lead.
The match had a very exciting finish. Leitrim led by 1-8 to 1-5 with three minutes left and held on as both sides gave of their all but no further scores materialised.
John Rogers hit three points for the Rossies but Glancy (1-4) expertly slotted a second-half penalty for the home team to see them to the winning line.
