GLENCAR/MANORHAMILTON GAA CLUB NOTES
FRANCIE ROONEY RIP
On Monday last (11th January) the Glencar and Manorhamilton areas were to learn of the sudden death of our dear friend Francie Rooney. As we tried to come to terms with our loss it was only natural that we started to reminisce over old and recent times with Francie. As we reeled in the years, many stories were recalled but in all those stories there was a connection - Francie was continually described as a person who always had time for people and a person of immense generosity and good will.
When you mention our Club name throughout the County there was always one name which was synonymous with the Glencar Manorhamilton Club. Francie had a life long love for our Club and his beloved Leitrim. When his playing years were behind him he instilled his love for the GAA in his children and from a very young age Aidan, Mark and Rosaleen were regulars in the Bee Park. Two of his proudest moments were to see his two sons (Mark and Aidan) claim championship glory with Glencar Manorhamilton in 1999 and to see his son (Aidan) score LeitrimÄôs last point and his fourth in the 1994 Connacht Final and to parade the Nestor Cup through Manorhamilton on that memorable night. He too, lended a hand at county management level having been a selector with the Leitrim Minors who captured the Connacht Title in 1998.
He was a passionate supporter of this club, one of our main fundraisers since its formation but more importantly when advice was being sought this man was always top of the list. He also served as Club Chairman of Coiste na nìg and the Senior Board. He in fact proved to be our most successful Club Chairperson having officiated over our Senior Championship win in 2008 and Senior Championship and League double in 2009.
Francie only stepped down as our Chairman at our last AGM on 11th December, 2009 and the AGM gathering showed their appreciation with a standing ovation for him on that night. At our Dinner Dance on the 29th December 2009 the Club honoured Francie with a Special Award for Outstanding Service to our Club. He was singled out because he was the backbone of this Club since its formation.
Large crowds turned out to pay their last respects to Francie and the Club formed a Guard of Honour at his removal and funeral mass. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Dympna, daughter Rosaleen, sons Aidan and Mark, his grandchildren, his brothers Brendan and Leo, his sister Teresa, his extended family, relatives and wide circle of friends. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
